(Free) Bullies Are a Pain in the Brain

From School Library JournalGrade 3-7?A deceptively simple approach to dealing with a difficult issue faced by millions of children every day. The advice throughout is clear, unequivocal, and helpful: "Tell your friends if you're being bullied. A bully is less likely to approach you if you're surrounded by your buddies." The advice for dealing with life-threatening situations is brief: "Run!" Fictional books abound on the topic?one of the most well-known being Mary Stolz's The Bully of Barkham Street (HarperCollins, 1985). Eda LeShan's nonfiction title When Kids Drive Kids Crazy (Dial, 1990; o.p.) deals extensively with the subject and provides excellent coping skills both for the victims of intimidation and abuse and for parents trying to help. However, bullied children are much more likely to pick up Romain's book on their initial foray into self-help, due to the attractive format with cartoon characters and lots of white space on the page. Resources for additional help include books, organizations, and Web sites. This useful, slim volume will have heavy usage.?Susan R. Immensely helpful to childrenBy \_()_/I bought the "Bullies are a Pain in the Brain" book and Trevor Romain: Bullies Are a Pain in the Brain DVD at about the same time. My seven and nine year-old kids were not having problems then, but I wanted them to be prepared for some tough situations. Neither of them read the book at the time, but they watched and enjoyed the video. The book has been sitting on the shelf for whenever they needed it.Lately, they've been reading the book -- not just reading it, but studying it carefully, so I knew there must be some children at school causing problems. It has helped them immensely. It also helps me, because I know when I see them reading that something is up. The kids were more willing to discuss their problems with me after reading the book. It gives them a way to verbalize their thoughts, put a name to what they were experiencing and really make them feel they were not alone.I've asked my kids if the "Bullies" book was useful. My kids both said yes. My son took the "ignore the bully" advice. My daughter did the "making friends" tactic and said the kid was no longer a bully to her. This is a wonderful book, written in language children understand. I recommend it be bought with the accompanying video. You never know when your kids will need them.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ... their child having difficulty in elementary school with someone annoying. My son took his to school and showed it to his teacher. The school promptly bought a copy for every classroom. It provides good lessons in coping skills in a humorous, age appropriate way. It also has a section for kids to identify if they might be bullying others. Great resource!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Had High HopesBy CustomerIn all fairness I do think this book has some quality information. However it was presented in a textbook fashion which can easily bore children in certain age ranges. My daughter is seven years old and loves reading but I think if this would have focused on a story of a character getting bullied and their overall journey it would have been better. Like I stated it has a lot of quality information but the textbook fashion in which it was told can at times be a bit stale for certain children and certain age ranges.
