A superb book that takes us into the subjective world of the child molester. It breaks new ground and provides a major contribution to sex research. Vital reading for all those interested in the interpretations of the men who commit unspeakable acts. -Martin S. Weinberg,Indiana University at BloomingtonAn example of how interviewing and life course methods can be done in ways that yield an empirically rich analysis useful for theoretical development. . . . A nicely written book using excellent methodology. -Contemporary SociologyVictims, survivors, and their supporters most want to know how and why people can sexually assault and terrorize children who love and trust them. Finally, after reading Doug Pryor's Unspeakable Acts, I feel a have a vivid and reliable answer to that question. This book is must reading for every student of child sexual abuse. -Hal Pepinsky,Indiana University at BloomingtonFrom the Back CoverThe sexual abuse of children is one of the most morally unsettling and emotionally inflammatory issues in American society today. It has been estimated that roughly one out of every four girls and one in ten boys experience some form of unwanted sexual attention either inside or outside the family before they reach adulthood. An alarmingly common occurrence, sexual abuse is traumatic and life-altering for children in its impact. How should society deal with the sexual victimization of children? Should known offenders be released back into our communities? If so, where, and with what rights, should they be allowed to live? In Unspeakable Acts, Douglas W. Pryor argues that much of this debate, designed to deal with abusers after they have offended, ignores the important issue of why men cross these forbidden sexual boundaries to molest children in the first place and how the behavior can possibly be prevented before it starts. Based on in-depth interviews with thirty men who molested their own children or the children of people they knew, Pryor provides a unique glimpse of those who become offenders. His analysis explores how the lives of offenders prior to their offending led up to and contributed to what they did, the ways that initial interest in sex with children began, the tactics offenders employed to molest their victims over time, how they felt about and reacted to their behavior between offending episodes, and how and why they stopped abusing.About the AuthorDoug Pryor is Assistant Professor of Sociology at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and co-author of the recent ground-breaking book Dual Attraction: Understanding Bisexuality.[Author Bio] where can i read books online for free without downloading Unspeakable Acts: Why Men Sexually Abuse Children

Very good read to help understandBy M. fletcherHow dangerous your child's life can be around strangers, and people who put on a mask of trust, so they can molest your child first chance they get; like on the car ride home from a prison they were just released from for molesting a child, in the back seat, molesting YOUR child, while you drive!! ( its in the book ) and I shudder to think of some of the other things in that book. You will freak out. So if you love your kids, read this book. And if you're a sick bastard who does this to kids, turn yourself in, you know you will never stop till you're arrested.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A delicate but critical subjectBy Joseph G. LangenUnspeakable acts would also be put out of our awareness if possible. However, sexual abuse of children appears in the news more that anyone would like. This is the only book I know of based on interviews with perpetrators, seeking to understand the influences on their abhorrent behavior. It also searches the thoughts and motivations of such individuals. Beginning to understand these people is the first step to learning how to deal with them in a more effective manner than trying to pretend their behavior does not exist or trying to stamp it out mindlessly. In my opinion, this is a landmark book.Joseph G.
