This book will make you a better, more effective and happier negotiator!By JohnTypically, I cannot stand "business advice" or "self-help" book, but I happened to get a copy of the Transformative Negotiator from a colleague who had read it. I must say that I loved it. It is clear, fun and easy to read, and at least made me re-think a number of my negotiating techniques. Also, in many aspects of negotiation, I agree with author Michele Huff's approaches, and it is always nice to get that confirmation.Chapters are relatively short (I suffer from a short attention span) and concise - and make the point efficiently without beating you over the head. Huff particularly nails it when she discusses humility, validation of opposing views and trusting your gut (although I am not on board with her discussion of gender gap). All in all, I highly recommend this quick, insightful read...it will definitely make your a better, more effective and happier negotiator.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This Old Negotiator Learned New Tricks!By willwrite4chocolateI didn't expect to like this book. In fact, I didn't intend to read it at all. I'm a retired labor lawyer, a Buddhist, and a writer. I know a few things about negotiation. More importantly, when I retired, I put all that negotiation stuff aside. I was done with it. So done in fact that I did not want to open a book that had the word "negotiator" in the title no matter how transformative it might be! So imagine my pleasant surprise when I began reading and quickly enjoying and even (gasp) learning from this book. Filled with great examples and practical advice, can help anyone from the seasoned attorney to the frustrated spouse get a better deal out of any bargaining session. Thanks to Ms. Huff for her insight and clear prose. It was a joy to read.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Creating Different Energy in NegotiationsBy CustomerAs the SHRM NM Council Secretary, I had the opportunity to introduce Michele Huff, one of the outstanding speakers at the 2016 SHRM NM Conference held March 7-9. To prepare for her introduction, I learned about Michele Huff using proven research methods... first I read her book, and then I googled incessantly to find out how she came to write such an insightful and useful book. Michele spent most of her professional life in Silicon Valley as an attorney with Sun Microsystems, which gave her a solid understanding of how the technology transfer part of research works in a business environment. Moving from the California in 2008, Michele began working for the University of New Mexico, focusing her expertise on intellectual property, technology, and research, while teaching and writing a book at the same time.Drawing on Michele's inspirations from Buddhism, the Dalai Lama, and her practice of qigong, Transformative Negotiator teaches the reader how to incorporate karma into the practice of artful negotiation. (1) Always show respect and fairness; by being fully aware of the causes and effects of your actions, you increase the likelihood of achieving success - both in the current negotiation and in future ones. (2) Humbleness and being selfless is essential in transformative negotiation - it takes real strength to put others' needs ahead of your own. (3) And most of all, whether you are a male or female, a transformative negotiator understands the value of connection and collaboration, and focuses on bridging gaps, not widening them.
