I couldn't put the book down and bought one for my mom and daughter. I love the redemptive part of his story too. No matter what we are dealt with, the Lord is with us and helps us heal through forgiveness.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Inspirational, Emotional, Highly Recommended Book!By SharonW.The author, Travis Vining was a High School friend of mine. We reconnected a couple of years ago and it was then that I found out about his unfortunate personal experiences growing up. When this book came out, I couldn't get a copy fast enough. I simply could not put the book down and while reading it I felt as if I was experiencing his life right there with him as I turned each and every page and read more. I never have felt that type of connection before when reading a book. I became very emotional in realizing all that he had endured growing up and we his friends never knew what was happening in his life. Through his eventual strong belief in God and looking to God for guidance and even answers from him, he was able to "Survive". As a teenager I had a tragedy of my own that happened to my family and from that point on I never believed in God, questioning how he could have chosen this life for me. BUT, after reading Transforming Darkness to Light, for Giving, I have to admit that I have revisited my feelings on not believing in God and realized that there truly is a God out there that does look out for all in different ways. I so admire Travis and will always be amazed at the strong individual he has become. His tragic experience in turn is going to benefit so many others, that is God's plan for him. This is a MUST read book.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Story of exceptional braveryBy Thomas HoferTravis Vining is exhibiting exceptional bravery, having to deal with a villain of the lowest ilk in the person of his father, John Vining. John is a serial killer and has no respect for life other than his own. He nearly destroys Travis and the other two children; especially reprehensible is his rejection of Travis' sister due to her sex. And that is in addition to the people he kills. But Travis, with ultimately the help of God plus that of counselors he sees, rises to new heights in life and is able to live a normal life with his wife and daughter. For what he has done, he deserves the admiration and respect of all those who come in contact with him, and he certainly has mine.
