Originally entitled "The Sword of Confrontation," this book is indeed an instruction manual for wielding a verbally nonviolent sword in problem-solving dilemmas. In educating the reader to identify an issue and face it without fear, Gerard offers specific and detailed directions for detecting and handling conflict. Noting that most people are never taught how to "confront" properly and effectively, Gerard emphasizes that such skills not only enhance personal empowerment, but provide integral tools for negotiation and conflict resolution. The author's experience in education and management lends pertinence to examples of conflict in the workplace as well as in the home. With plenty of charts, models, examples of confrontation scenarios, and on-the-floor coaching guidelines, this is a hands-on manual for learning how to get along. -- NAPRA ReViewFrom the Back CoverHandling Verbal Confrontation by Robert V. Gerard, Ph.D. One of the major inadequacies of our culture is our inability to verbally confront one another. It kills interpersonal relationships. It is a time bomb within families. It causes low productivity, boredom, and apathy. It creates stress and headaches. It increases our consumption of aspirin, alcohol, and drugs. Very few even recognize it as a problem, and even fewer know what to do about it. We were never taught how to confront properly and effectively. Can we identify an issue and face it creatively-without fear? We need to learn these skills! Our success depends on them. Handling Verbal Confrontation guides the reader in how to clarify and verbally address issues, and face others successfully-without fear. These skills are integral tools in negotiation and conflict resolution. They belong to the inner tactical strategy-the core process, if you will-of facing yourself, facing the issue, and facing the other person. They are a key to personal empowerment. "Gerard has written an accurate and helpful book about how to communicate with people. It is a must for those who want to be effective in the workplace. Read it and make the ideas work for you." - Dr. Drea Zigarmi, Coauthor along with Ken Blanchard: Leadership and the One Minute Manager Handling Verbal Confrontation is an excellent communication resource that is practical, effective, and invaluable. The Gerard model provides skills and a clear map for negotiation and creative problem solving during times of conflict. The book is an outstanding classic for peacemaking in the 21st Century." Angeles Arrien, Cultural Anthropologist Author of Four-Fold Way and Working Together "Are you a gentle soul? Do you walk the other way to avoid confrontation? - or perhaps shake for days if yelled at? If so Handling Verbal Confrontation is for you. It presents a positive win-win situation for communication in difficult areas. It will inform and uplift... and in the process will give you confidence. The gentle soul remains, but with new empowering tools. It works!"-Lee Carroll, Author of the Kryon SeriesAbout the AuthorRobert Gerard began his working career as a civil engineer. Finding his interests lay with people, not things, he went back to college and completed a Bachelor's Degree in Social Psychology (1978) and a Master's Degree in Management and Organizational Psychology (1981). He has also completed all the required course work for doctorates in Educational Management at Georgia State University and Spiritual Psychology at the California Institute for Integral Studies. In 1998, Robert earned his Ph.D. in Psychology of Spirituality at the College of Metaphysical Science. He has worked as an Organizational Psychologist and Corporate Consultant specializing in improving communication and resolving conflicts within entire companies. The experiential methods he used for the creative handling of confrontations eventually found their way into written form in his book, Handling Verbal Confrontation: Take the Fear Out of Facing Others. Robert's work experience spans over thirty-five years and crosses major industries: engineering, manufacturing, banking, education, and publishing. He has held consulting contracts for many major corporations, chaired an international convention, and spearheaded the start up efforts for the National Safety Council's "Safety Training Institute" for Western US and Pacific Rim regions. Inspired by his inner guidance, Robert started Oughten House Publications in 1992. As visionary and President, Oughten House within six years has become a world leader in the metaphysical and self-mastery books. In July 1997, a major shift in Robert's life occurred-he received a DNA ACTIVATION and the wisdom to bring it into the world. His ability to encode and activate the multi-strand DNA within chromosomes, to heal others, and set into motion cellular rejuvenation was revealed. Presenting these techniques globally became his mission. He then launched Oughten House Foundation, Inc., a worldwide educational and networking non-profit organization advocating spiritual awakening, self-mastery, and DNA healing. The third edition of his book, DNA Healing Techniques: Tools for Physical and Emotional Self-Healing has just been released. The three powerful DNA healings techniques are proving results long awaited by physicians, pharmacists, and metaphysicians. Robert sustains a private counseling practice and continues to offer lectures, seminars, and workshops on the DNA Healing Techniques, Confronting Self-Truths, and Self-Mastery. 6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Not worth the moneyBy JustMeI believe that this book confuses assertiveness with rudeness and bullying. It basically is teaching you to be the boss of every situation and always get your own way no matter what. It's not about respecting others or even about having others respect you, it's about acting like a 2-year old until you get your own way. Also, this book seems to be written only for people in office or industrial jobs who are in supervisory positions. It in no way helped me, as I am not in either of those industries and I believe in mutual respect.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Very informativeBy SamWhile some people may find the content in rude and over the top, I have found the subject very educational. I have PERSONALLY used the techniques and guidelines to assist me through confrontations, and they proved to be very helpful. I feel stronger and healthier now that I am not timid to speak up to others. Also I feel that the people I confront do not find me rude and abrupt. We both leave satisfied that they worked out issues quickly and effectively without arguing and stepping on each others toes! It truly is a "Win, win, win" situation. Thanks.
