The Best in Its ClassBy stephen statenAs a graduate student in Conflict Management and ten years of experience in helping churches through conflicts I have developed an increasing appreciation for Hope in the Face of Conflict. For over a year I have been recommending this book to people everywhere I go. It is an easy read, full of substance along with great supporting illustrations from history. HITFOC contains illustrations from Cambodia, Palestine, Israel, Egypt, South Africa, former USSR and the United States. At over 300 pages it makes for a great reference. For instance, Dr. Kenneth Newberger clears up one of the most misapplied passages of Scripture (Matthew 18:15-18). The use of "witnesses" to mean "mediators" is a popular practice of peacemaking that tends to make conflicts worse.I am on my second time through the book and I felt prompted contacted Dr. Newberger through resolvechurchconflict.com. I found him to be friendly and helpful.Hope in the Face of Conflict is a must read for anyone anywhere near a conflict in a religious setting.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A "must read" for those in ministryBy SundownerLoved your book. Found it helpful for lots of reasons:~ Scholarly (well researched and annotated)~ It presents a model of conflict resolution that is a thoroughly "Judeo-Christian" model. This goes beyond the usual dispute resolution models being taught in universities around the country. "It can and should be used both inside and outside the church" (p.310). It moves the discussion from 3rd party neutrals who facilitate negotiation so that conflicted parties can walk away with solutions they can "live with" toward enabling parties to actually reconcile. Fantastic!~ solid exegesis is demonstrated in numbers of places in the book - especially the Matthew 18 passage so often misused in the church.~ Kept me interested throughout with stories that actually illustrate the points being made.Hope in the Face of Conflict: Making Peace with Others the Way God Makes Peace with Us1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Clearest book yet on biblical peacemakingBy Andy JohnsonDr. Newberger clearly understands the core principle that we are to mimic God in our behaviors (not the reverse). God is the standard and we follow Him as we seek to be peacemakers after His image. This book lays out critical concepts such as: conditional forgiveness, limitation on Matt. 18 process, Christian mediation. This is a must read for those who are serious about pursuing a deep understanding of the "biblical" truths related to peacemaking and conciliation. It lays out a very clear path (process) for third-party mediation that is faithful to the thrust of Scripture and the heart of God.
