An intimate exploration of the death of a father and famous writerBy rebekahThis is a searing, honest effort by the writer to both make amends with his father on his dying bed and acknowledge what it meant to live with such a father. It is written in diary format which makes for a literal and very personal account of the last few weeks of William Saroyan's life. What struck me the most was the depth of psychological understanding Aram had of his father; he was able to acknowledge the almost monster like behavior and link it with the dramatic death of a 3 year old child's father and loss of family. No excuse is given but there is a gentle understanding that the person who caused so much suffering did so because he had suffered so much himself. And Aram is not afraid to dig all the way down to the bottom of the proverbial well and is brave enough to share with us his discoveries. Those of us who read do so in an attempt to find a bit of humanity in all those typed pages. So few writers are willing to give so generously of themselves. When they don't, the results are often banal - fancy window dressing that is merely pleasing to the eye. But when they do, we get that longed for glimpse of our own humanity, our own relationships, our own sufferings and joy and Aram has created that experience in Last Rites. I highly recommend it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. An interesting book for fans of William Saroyan.By FilmfanThe other reviewer who gave this book 4 stars sums it up very well.A well-written book by the son of William Saroyan, writing about histroubled relationship with his father, and about visiting his fatherjust before William Saroyan died. I have read a fair number of WilliamSaroyan's books, and an interesting biography of him, so I was quite interestedin reading this book.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bumpy Ride AheadBy WORDPAINTERIt is hard to rate this book and keep my feelings about the man...the main subject...silent. Now finally reading some of his works, I am too confused to evaluate the writing, all the writing from what might be the truth. It is indeed quite complicated. Though fans of this man will probably enjoy the ride.
