SmithAuthor Mike Van gives readers a front row seat, showing what it's like to be an immigrant to a strange new world. Van's family left Vietnam and settled in Australia while he was just a lad. In reading his story, I made the move with him into a new culture. The transition was heart-rending. His entire family was thrown into turmoil for years.Watching Van mature from a self-protective, hard-shelled young survivor into a responsible, keen observer of human nature is an adventure in itself. What readers get in the bargain is an opportunity to learn, as he did, how to overcome the obstacles that so often cast even the most intimate interpersonal relationships into question.Van has learned what it takes most people half a lifetime or longer to understand: fear of being hurt keeps most people from experiencing true connection with another person. It is by risking all that human beings learn who will love us without limit even when we fall, fumble and fail--and these are the people to surround ourselves with, and the kind of person we too must strive to be (even when it's especially hard) if we want to find love that will endure "'til death do us part".2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Understanding Hurt and PainBy SunshineAuthor Mike Evans tackles relationship issues of all shapes and forms.Coming from a family that struggled through poverty, identity crisis, abuse and all types of traumatic experiences, its amazing how the author was able open his heart not just to reveal pain, but to understand where life's difficulties were coming from. Rather than hold grudges against people who caused him pain, he learned to understand their limitations replacing pent-up anger with loving compassion. The author spoke of how each family member lived in fear because of their father's anger and frustration. Having been wounded from battle, his father was forced to work as a laborer to feed the family. All the struggle and suffering affected his temper, causing nonstop tension at home. One time his father was so drunk, he poured gasoline all outside their house, so that everyone will burn in their sleep. Some people will be scarred for life after a painful experience. We hear of people who go through life without forgiving their parents for causing them so much pain.Believe it or not, the author did not only forgive his father . He even made an effort to understand his behaviour, the reason behind all the anger in his heart. The author writes ..."it took me a long time to realize my father was never trying to hurt us. He was just struggling with his own fears and dark past. His words may never have been elegant, but he was always there when we needed him. He showed us love through his actions and the little things he did for us. Many of us are too focused on our own pain and fears to notice the simple gestures others make that enrich our lives So much love is unspoken."The book also tackled the importance of having a relationship with one's self. We normally move mountains to make other people happy yet most of the time we leave nothing for ourselves. We have a tendency to take ourselves for granted.Mothers do everything for their husband and children, yet they cannot remember the last time they had a few hours of rest, so they can recover from all the work. The last time they rewarded themselves because of a job well-done. Yet here they are, using up all their savings to buy gifts for other people. The chapter on "Freedom to Breathe" talks about the importance of paying close attention to one's needs. The premise is simple, how can we love others when do not love ourselves? How can we give something we do not have?In order to be a "loving" partner one must strike a balance between the attention given to others, and the attention we give ourselves. In short, its alright to put ourselves first. There is nothing wrong with giving someone a nice expensive gift, but if it means starving for days because you used up your life's savings, then for sure you will end up miserable.Where is the love and happiness in that?"Freedom to breath" is all about finding our voice. Listening to what we really want in life, and not what others expect from us. It's about spending quiet time basking in our own thoughts, discovering new things that makes us happy.People who have healthy relationship with themselves can happily love others sans fear and insecurity.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. a book that can teach many life lessons and improve interpersonal skillsBy MashiryFrom Hurt to Happiness is a fantastic book and I would like to recommend it to every of you currently in a relationship or who are frustrated and disappointed of relationships .
