From BooklistBalducci combines her writing talent and her life as the parent of five rambunctious boys to deliver a collection of essays on the everyday aspects of mothering boys. Pondering her bald backyard, she longs for grassy vistas she knows she will never see. She has five climbers, diggers, and runners with huge appetites that require ceaseless feeding. She insists that her husband take the lead on Boy Scout hosting and camping activities but manages to get pulled in anyway. Balducci regales with stories of breaking up tussles, teaching etiquette, hosting birthday parties, managing homework regimes, and trying to get her own work done. Mothers of boys will recognize the scenarios and appreciate the labor of love. --Vanessa BushFrom the Back Cover"This book is a celebration of boyhood in all its glory."--Dr. Kevin Leman, author of the New York Times bestseller Have a New Kid by FridayWhen Rachel Balducci looks for material for her writing, she doesn't have to look far. It's not really a manual on how to be a better parent or anything...just a funny tale of what this author has gone through with her family and what it has taught her as a parent. I laughed through most of this book, however (not a manual aside) I learned a lot, too. It's not told in a way that you feel like you are being scolded at for being wrong. The author simply says what she has learned works for her as a parent...and a LOT of it makes so much sense that you just feel that it is worth trying. The antics of the boys and the way the author writes about her parenting journey make for a hilarious read; whether you learn anything from it or not. I will definitely continue to recommend this book to other parents.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Over the Top "Boys Will Be Boys" MentalityBy Christy CloseI was looking forward to this pick for our book club, but was disappointed. Balducci's writing is very disjointed and has no clear theme to tie the blog posts together. Yes, she clearly has not written a book so much as printed a series of posts from her blog and bound them. Her writing is often confusing as she tends to use "boy" or "son" instead of a name. I appreciate her desire to respect her sons' privacy, but she could have made up names or something to create clarity. Then worst of all, this book fully encourages the old "boys will be boys" mentality of parenting. Balducci often justifies allowing her sons' wild and violent behavior because she's "raising warriors not wimps".2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. My new favorite book!!! :)By SarahHI, too, have FIVE children.....ALL boys, so this book had me literally laughing out loud! I could relate to SO much of it! It is a very easy read. It also, of course, choked me up many times, too, as it talks about the sweetness of boys and the many joys of raising them! I bought another one to give to my friend, who has SIX children.....ALL boys, for her birthday. She's going to love it!
